What Is the Subclass 462 Visa?

The Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462) is a temporary visa that lets eligible young people live, work, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months — with the option to extend for a second or even third year. It's designed for young adults from specific countries who want to holiday in Australia while supplementing their funds through short-term work. The application is submitted entirely online, and there's no need to visit a consulate.

This guide covers eligibility, what documents to prepare, how to apply, what it costs, and what to know once your visa is approved.

Eligibility Requirements

The 462 visa is only available to passport holders from countries that have a bilateral arrangement with Australia. Eligible countries include:

Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Türkiye, Uruguay, United States of America, Vietnam.

If your country is not on the list, you may want to check whether the Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) applies to your passport instead. Check out our guide about the Working Holiday visa for more information.

Note: Applicants from China, India, and Vietnam are currently required to enter a ballot before applying. This involves registering through ImmiAccount during a set window, paying a non-refundable AUD $25 registration fee, and waiting to be randomly selected. Only those invited can proceed with a full application.

  • Be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the time of application

Documents You'll Need to Prepare

Have everything ready before you start your application.

Passport: valid for the duration of your stay. Scan the personal details page.

Passport-sized photo: digital, meeting Australian visa photo specifications.

Proof of funds: recent bank statements showing at least AUD $5,000.

Police clearance certificate: from your home country, and any other country you've lived in for 12 or more months in the past 10 years (since you turned 16).

Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC): mandatory for the entire duration of your stay under visa condition 8501. You must purchase this before applying and upload proof with your application. Only OVHC policies from approved Australian providers (Bupa, Allianz, nib, Medibank, AIA) are valid; travel insurance does not satisfy this requirement.

Education documents: proof of whichever qualification applies to your nationality (see Section 1 for requirements by country).

English language evidence: required for all nationalities (see Section 1 for accepted tests and exemptions).

Letter of government support: required for Ecuador, Greece, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mongolia, Peru, Poland, San Marino, Slovenia, Thailand, and Türkiye. Note that Malaysia requires a Good Conduct Certificate instead of a standard letter. This document is issued by your home government confirming your participation in the program. Contact your country's relevant ministry to request it before applying. Not required for all other eligible nationalities.

Health examination: may be required depending on your nationality and circumstances. The ImmiAccount portal will notify you after lodging your application if you need to complete one through an approved panel physician.

Step-by-Step Application Process

The entire application is done online through Australia's ImmiAccount portal. There is no in-person or paper option.

Step 1: Create an ImmiAccount

Go to immi.homeaffairs.gov.au and create an account. This is where you'll submit your application, upload documents, pay the fee, and track progress.

Step 2: Start a new application

Log in, select 'New Application', choose 'Temporary' visa category, then select 'Work and Holiday (462)'.

Step 3: Complete the application form

Fill in all fields carefully: personal details, passport information, travel history, employment and education history, and health and character declarations. Never provide false or misleading information. Doing so can result in visa refusal that may affect future applications to Australia.

Step 4: Upload your documents

Attach all required supporting documents. PDF and JPEG are typically accepted. Make sure everything is clearly legible.

Step 5: Pay the visa application charge

The fee is AUD $670, paid online by credit or debit card at the time of submission. It is non-refundable once paid, even if the visa is refused.

Step 6: Wait for a decision

After submitting, you'll receive a Transaction Reference Number (TRN) — save this to track your application. A case officer may contact you for additional information, so respond promptly to any requests. You will be notified of the outcome via your ImmiAccount.

Processing times vary depending on your nationality and how complete your application is. The Department of Home Affairs reports that 75% of applications are processed within 21 days to 5 months. Complex or incomplete applications can take 6–12 months or longer.

Step 7: Travel to Australia

Once your visa is granted, you'll receive a visa grant notification via email; save this document. Your visa is linked electronically to your passport, so there's no physical label or sticker. When you arrive in Australia, present your passport at the border, and immigration will be able to see your visa. You must enter Australia before your visa's entry date expires.

After You Arrive

Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) as soon as possible through the Australian Taxation Office at ato.gov.au. It's free and done online. Without one, your employer will withhold tax at a higher rate.

The 462 visa can be extended for a second and even a third year if you meet certain criteria during your stay. Each extension requires completing a set amount of specified regional work during the current visa period and submitting a new application through ImmiAccount before your visa expires.

Practical notes:

  • The 462 visa is valid for 12 months from the date it is granted. The 12-month stay period begins on your first entry into Australia.

  • You cannot work for the same employer for more than 6 months without getting approval from the Department of Home Affairs to continue.

  • Study is capped at 4 months total. For a longer study, you would need a student visa.

  • You cannot change your visa status from inside Australia. If you want to stay longer than 12 months or work without restrictions, you'll need to apply for a different visa from outside the country.

  • You are required to maintain Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) for the entire duration of your stay under visa condition 8501. You are not covered by Medicare unless your country has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, and even then, OVHC is still recommended to cover services Medicare doesn't include.

Costs and Fees to Expect

The visa application charge is AUD $670, paid online at the time of submission, and is non-refundable regardless of the outcome.

Before applying, you'll also need to purchase Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC). Budget around AUD $40 to $80 per month, depending on your provider and level of cover.

Other costs to factor in include a police clearance certificate, which varies by country but is typically the equivalent of AUD $20 to $100, and an English language test if required, with IELTS costing around AUD $300 to $400.

If the Department of Home Affairs requests a health examination after you lodge your application, the cost varies by country and provider and is typically in the range of AUD $300 to $500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my partner or family?

No. The 462 visa doesn't include a provision for dependents. Your partner or family members would need to apply for their own visas.

Can I study full-time?

No. Study is limited to 4 months total.

Can I apply if I'm already in Australia?

In most cases, no. You need to apply for and be granted the visa before entering Australia.

What happens if my application is refused?

You'll be notified of the refusal and the reasons. In some cases, you may be able to appeal through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). However, the application fee is not refunded.

How do I qualify for a second year?

Complete 88 days of specified work (plant and animal cultivation, fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling, or tourism and hospitality in northern Australia or other specified regional areas) during your first year, then apply for a new 462 visa through ImmiAccount before your current one expires.

What's the difference between the Work and Holiday visa (462) and the Working Holiday visa (417)?

Both are working holiday visas, but they cover different nationalities. The 417 visa covers countries like the UK, Ireland, Canada, and most of Europe. The 462 visa covers the countries listed in Section 1. Check which one applies to your passport.
